Coal dust befouled the skies above the great cities, reducing the mighty sun to a red smear behind perpetual chestnut haze. Aspiring astronomers climbed the highest peaks or traveled far beyond the urban sprawl for sanitary glimpses of the heavens through polished lenses. Around them in the dense woods others also gazed skyward while dancing beneath the moon. These were the covens of witches, who had learned the cycles of the stars many millennia ago, before any steam-powered engine ever spun its gears.

An owl perched amidst the twisted limbs of a dying tree, a silhouette of bare flesh centered in its reflective stare. It hooted once, ruffled its feathers against the brisk night and watched the ceremony unfold.

Adora stood in the exact center of the pentacle traced with lines of salt. An obsidian rune dangled between her supple breasts from a hemp cord strung about her neck. Winds howled through rattling branches, but the air inside the protective circle stood still.

Her hair was perfect, parted straight down the middle, one half stark white and dusted silver, the other half raven black and powdered cobalt blue. Lengthy bangs were held back from her face by bobbins of lace. Hours of tedious waxing ensured smooth caressing of pale flesh.

Biding time, she waited with her head tilted toward the heavens; patience was the only virtue ever learned through trials with the coven mothers. Fine scars from their lashings crisscrossed like fine lace across her bare bottom. No matter the depth of her concentration, her gifts never matured at the rate they’d desired. Then, soon after the Fever consumed her, everything changed. Aether bent at her whim, and the mothers concealed their fear when anger burned inside her eyes.

“Guardians of the Spirit Realm,” she spoke loud with a hint of her old French accent. “When the witching hour rings true, bring my lover Alexandre back to me. Other souls may hear my call, but they are not welcome in this place. Only the one named Alexandre Malveaux, who has known my body more intimately than any other, may enter this sacred space.”

Wormwood incense smoldered around her bare toes. The owl looked on in wait; Adora’s chest rose and fell numerous times with her breath. She stood still, her patience waning.

Adora raised her arms; incandescent aether swirled about her fists. Her breasts heaved with a deep breath before she yelled into the night, “Oh, great and marvelous Guardians of the Spirit Realm, hear my plea! I have been a faithful servant, practicing my craft in ways only intended to please your will. I beg of you, on this anniversary of our proposal, that you bring Alexandre forth, so that I may kiss his lips, and feel his arms about me one last time.”

Long shadows of curious spirits gathered around the circle, wondering who dared disrupt their slumber. To some blackened eyes her form was all too familiar.

“Please, I beg of you!” Frustration swirled in the centers of her crystal-blue eyes. “The fracture through my heart cracks deeper with every passing moment.
